This Thursday 22 September, Sophie Wilmès returns to the Belgian Federal Parlement. Two months ago, she announced that she was leaving her ministerial duties for family reasons.
“My family situation requires me to consider my commitment to the people of Belgium in a different way but my desire to continue my work for my country and for its citizens remains perfectly intact. I will therefore have the opportunity to do so from the Parlement.”
Sophie Wilmès will be an effective member of the Committee on Constitution and Revival of Democracy.
“I hope to use the experience I gained in my previous functions to help us move forward on these crucial issues. The successive crises show us indeed the urgent need to rethink the structure and modus operandi of the State in order to ensure coherence, efficiency and transparency. More generally, the evolution of our world should make us wonder how we can modernise our democracy in order to preserve its fundamentals: our values and our freedoms. These fundamentals are also at the heart of the discussions taking place in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, of which I will be a substitute member.
In addition to her work in committee, Sophie Wilmès will continue to work on other issues that are close to her heart, in close cooperation with her colleagues from the Mouvement Réformateur.
